BUYER BEWARE!!

Unfortunately, in our industry, consumers should be aware of "Bait & Switch" or “Blow & Go” air duct cleaning companies. These companies give a false sense of a low price deal only to swindle customers into spending extra for services.

What is "Bait & Switch"?

This is a sales method in which a product is advertised at a very low price to attract customers, who are then encouraged to buy a more expensive product. These companies often advertise lower than normal prices or even offer "free estimates" to get consumers to use their service. Then instead of sending out certified technicians to do the job, they send aggressive, pushy, ex car salesmen to convince the customer to spend hundreds, if not thousands more than the original quote on products or services the customer may or may not need. And if a customer refuses the extra services, these companies will break down their equipment and consider the job done, charging the customer for incomplete work, never to be seen or heard from again.

What is "Blow & Go"?

In our industry, there is a process to properly clean your air ducts. Vacuuming out the ducts to remove dust, debris, and other loose particles should always be performed when cleaning out your air ducts before adding any kind of treatment to the system. Most customers add a sanitizing solution and/or mold remediation to their services. These treatments should be added after the ducts are cleaned of debris so the they actually penetrate through to the bacterial buildup. Some companies skip the vacuum process or avoid it altogether and take the route of only administering solutions through the ductwork. This is not effective as the treatments will settle on top of the debris and cannot reach deep into the crevices to kill the source of the microbial growth. These "Blow & Go" companies will charge the same or more than the average price of a full duct cleaning, while not cleaning out the ductwork the way it should.

Be Sure The Job is Done Right!

Customers often find that these fly by night air duct companies do a poor job of cleaning the air duct system, but unfortunately, this is after they've had them in their home and experienced the uncomfortable situation. Most of these companies offer unreasonably low prices of $79, $99, or $149 through direct mail packs to entice customers and often change their company name once caught defrauding consumers.

Air duct cleaning is recommended every 1-3 years to maintain clean indoor air quality and to improve the efficiency of your HVAC unit. If you live in Florida, any legitimate air duct company knows with our climate, that air duct maintenance is necessary and repeat visits to clean the air ducts every few years is part of living here. These companies don't plan to see you again, but we do!

The Negative Effects of Mold in Air Vents

Aside from a musty smell, mold spores can cause people to experience health problems, such as coughing, sneezing, nasal blockage, itchy eyes, skin irritation, breathing difficulties, stuffy nose, runny nose, headaches, and other allergy-like symptoms. The longer one is exposed to mold, and the more mold that’s present, the greater one chances of developing these conditions.

Mold exposure can also induce nausea, tiredness, diarrhea, and other symptoms in vulnerable people. Individuals with pre-existing respiratory problems are more prone to develop mold sensitivity after exposure to it. People who are allergic to molds will be more severely affected.

7 Common Types of Molds Found in Air Ducts

  • Acremonium - This common type of air duct mold forms over many months or even years. It takes on a white powdery appearance and will typically concentrate around moist or wet parts of your vents.
  • Alternaria - This is another extremely common air duct mold strain. It takes on the appearance of velvet-like fabric and is usually green or brown in color. This mold strain needs a significant and constant supply of air duct water.
  • Aspergillus - Can take on a wide range of appearances, making it somewhat difficult to identify unless you have a very trained eye. It is commonly found around air duct leaks and can take on a brown, yellow, or white color.
  • Fusarium - This mold strain is commonly found in air ducts that have been significantly damaged by water leaks or excess condensation. It is known to spread outside of air ducts and on to wall surfaces prone to receiving condensation.
  • Mucor - This type of mold usually grows in air conditioning units. It typically is spread from the air conditioner unit throughout the entire air duct system of a house. It is extremely toxic and needs to be dealt with quickly.
  • Stachybotrys - This black-colored mold is very toxic. While it is easy to visually identify, it tends to develop deep in air ducts, making it somewhat difficult to spot. It is known to rapidly spread with adequate moisture.
  • Trichoderma - This gray, white, or greenish colored mold needs a steady supply of water to take root in an air duct. Unfortunately, air conditioning units give this mold strain enough airborne moisture to feed on, allowing it to spread rapidly throughout a duct system.

Cleaning your dryer vent is essential for several reasons:

  • Fire Safety: Lint buildup in the dryer vent is a leading cause of house fires. Regular cleaning reduces this risk significantly.
  • Efficiency: A clogged vent forces your dryer to work harder, increasing energy consumption and prolonging drying times. A clean vent helps your dryer operate efficiently.
  • Longevity: Regular maintenance can extend the lifespan of your dryer by reducing strain on the appliance.
  • Cost Savings: An efficient dryer uses less energy, which can lower your utility bills.
  • Reduced Wear and Tear: With a clean vent, your dryer doesn't have to run as long, reducing wear and tear on your clothes and the machine.
  • Odor Prevention: Built-up lint and debris can cause musty odors. Cleaning the vent helps keep your laundry smelling fresh.
  • Recommended Frequency: It's generally recommended to have dryer ducts cleaned every 12 to 18 months, but this can vary depending on factors like usage, bulk items, and whether you live year-round at your home.

The cost to clean a dryer vent typically ranges from $125 to $350, depending on factors like the length of the vent, accessibility, and vent exit location.

  • Basic Cleaning: For a straightforward cleaning, you might pay around $125 to $200.
  • More Complex Cleaning: If the exit of the dryer line vents out 2 stories or higher, there are extra charges. Also, if the cleaning is difficult to access such as dryers with built in cabinets or stackable washer/dryer unit combos, the cost can go up from $200 to $350.
  • Replacement Parts: Dryer duct replacement lines vary from $35 to $50 to replace brittle or damaged dryer duct lines. Dryer clamps are $10-$20each. Full dryer duct replacement varies on complexity of the job.

The Hidden Dangers of Dirty Air Ducts: How Neglecting Cleaning Affects Your Health

When it comes to home maintenance, air ducts are often out of sight and out of mind. However, what many homeowners don't realize is that dirty air ducts can have a profound impact on indoor air quality, contributing to various health problems and even affecting the efficiency of HVAC systems. In this article, we explore the hidden dangers of neglecting air duct cleaning, backed by data and statistics that show the real risks to your health and well-being.

The Importance of Clean Air Ducts for Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is a growing concern for many households. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, and in some cases, the concentration of pollutants indoors can be 100 times higher than outdoors. This is particularly alarming given that the average American spends 90% of their time indoors, as reported by the American Lung Association.

Air ducts play a crucial role in circulating air throughout a home, but over time, they can accumulate dust, dirt, mold, pollen, and other airborne contaminants. Without regular cleaning, these pollutants are continuously recirculated, significantly degrading indoor air quality. A study by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) found that, on average, air ducts in homes that hadn’t been cleaned for three or more years contained up to 40 pounds of dust and debris.

The Impact of Poor Air Quality on Health

Poor indoor air quality can lead to a wide range of health issues, from mild discomfort to severe respiratory conditions. The American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI) reports that 50% of all illnesses are caused or aggravated by polluted indoor air. Furthermore, indoor air pollution has been linked to both short-term and long-term health effects, with children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions being particularly vulnerable.

1. Respiratory Issues
One of the most immediate and obvious health impacts of dirty air ducts is the increased risk of respiratory problems. Dust, pet dander, mold spores, and other contaminants in the air can aggravate conditions like asthma, allergies, and bronchitis. A study published in the Journal of Environmental Health found that homes with unclean air ducts had a 25% higher incidence of respiratory issues compared to homes with regularly cleaned ducts.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has also noted that children are particularly susceptible to poor air quality, with studies showing that exposure to dust and allergens in the home can increase the risk of developing asthma by 40%. In fact, 8.4% of children in the United States are diagnosed with asthma, and poor indoor air quality is a significant contributing factor.

2. Allergies and Asthma Symptoms
For individuals with allergies or asthma, dirty air ducts can exacerbate symptoms. Dust mites, pollen, and pet dander are common allergens that can accumulate in air ducts and trigger allergic reactions. A survey conducted by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) found that 60% of allergy sufferers reported worsening symptoms when exposed to poor indoor air quality, particularly in homes with dirty air ducts.
Mold is another major concern. Mold spores can grow in humid or damp areas of air ducts, and when these spores become airborne, they can cause severe allergic reactions and respiratory distress. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that one in three Americans is allergic to mold, and prolonged exposure to mold-contaminated air can lead to chronic health issues, including sinus infections and lung irritation.

3. VOCs and Chemical Contaminants
In addition to biological contaminants like dust and mold, air ducts can also harbor volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are chemicals that are emitted from various household products, including paints, cleaning supplies, and building materials. According to the EPA, the concentration of VOCs is often ten times higher indoors than outdoors, and dirty air ducts can trap and circulate these harmful chemicals throughout the home.
Prolonged exposure to VOCs has been linked to a range of health problems, including headaches, nausea, and damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified some VOCs as carcinogenic, meaning they can increase the risk of developing cancer over time. A study conducted by the University of California found that homes with unclean air ducts had 30% higher concentrations of VOCs than homes with cleaned ducts.

How Dirty Air Ducts Affect HVAC System Efficiency

The health impacts of dirty air ducts are concerning, but the consequences don’t stop there. Neglecting air duct cleaning can also take a toll on your HVAC system, leading to decreased efficiency and higher energy bills. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that 25% to 40% of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted due to dirt and debris in the air ducts.

1 Reduced Airflow
Dust and debris can accumulate in air ducts, obstructing airflow and forcing the HVAC system to work harder to maintain the desired temperature. This not only increases energy consumption but also puts additional strain on the system, leading to more frequent repairs and a shorter lifespan for the equipment. A study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) found that HVAC systems with dirty air ducts had 15% less airflow than systems with clean ducts, resulting in a 21% increase in energy usage.

2. Increased Wear and Tear
Dirty air ducts can also cause wear and tear on key components of the HVAC system, such as the blower motor and heat exchanger. When the system has to work harder to push air through clogged ducts, it can overheat and eventually fail. The NADCA estimates that 90% of HVAC system failures are caused by dirt and debris buildup. Homeowners who neglect air duct cleaning are more likely to experience costly repairs and may need to replace their HVAC system sooner than expected.

3. Cost Savings Through Air Duct Cleaning
Regular air duct cleaning can help improve HVAC efficiency and reduce energy costs. According to the EPA, homeowners can save 10% to 15% on their energy bills by ensuring that their air ducts are clean and their HVAC system is running at peak efficiency. The NADCA further estimates that the average household can save up to $120 annually on heating and cooling costs after a professional air duct cleaning.

The Economic and Health Benefits of Regular Air Duct Cleaning

Investing in regular air duct cleaning not only improves indoor air quality and reduces the risk of health issues but also offers significant economic benefits. The NADCA recommends that homeowners have their air ducts cleaned every one to three years, depending on factors such as the presence of pets, allergies, and environmental conditions.

1. Return on Investment (ROI)
The cost of professional air duct cleaning typically ranges from $450 to $1300, depending on the size of the home and the level of contamination. However, the long-term savings on energy bills, reduced HVAC repairs, and the health benefits make it a worthwhile investment. Homeowners can expect an ROI of 200% to 300% over the life of their HVAC system, especially when factoring in the extended lifespan of the equipment.

2. Improved Health and Quality of Life
For families with children, the elderly, or individuals with respiratory conditions, the health benefits of clean air ducts are invaluable. A study by the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine found that homes with clean air ducts reported a 50% reduction in respiratory symptoms among residents, including fewer cases of coughing, sneezing, and shortness of breath.

Conclusion

Dirty air ducts pose a hidden danger to both your health and the efficiency of your HVAC system. The accumulation of dust, mold, allergens, and chemicals in air ducts can lead to a range of respiratory problems, exacerbate allergies, and even contribute to serious health conditions over time. In addition, neglecting air duct cleaning can reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system, leading to higher energy bills and costly repairs.

By investing in regular air duct cleaning, homeowners can improve indoor air quality, reduce health risks, and save money on energy costs. The statistics make it clear: clean air ducts are essential for a healthy, efficient, and comfortable home environment.
